Happy Easter!

A round up of the Spring term including news from the classes, Multi-Skills festival, and a STEM club focus. Thank you to all the staff for their hard work in developing Little Explorers and the Spade to Spoon programme.
Dragons class
This term the dragons have been busy storyboarding and filming materials for their documentary.
Dragons have thoroughly enjoyed making good use of the new kitchen. They've learnt about the processes that food goes through, and are looking forward to using food harvested from the garden next term. Dragons have baked tiffin, cheese straws, bread, biscuits and made soup.
Baking Easter biscuits
The topic of Romans stimulated the class in their learning. Dragons enjoyed the trip to Bath and discovering about life in Roman Britain and why the Romans settled in Bath.
In Dragons there has been a big push to learn to tell the time. If parents wanted to continue to reinforce their knowledge of the seasons and time of day over the holidays, it would be beneficial!
The year 3s and Year 2s enjoyed a multi-skills workshop this week. Overall, it has been an active and positive term!
Next term we are Engineers!
The Shire
The Shire have all been learning about Easter this week. The Pixies have been learning about the Christian tradition of Easter, why they celebrate Easter, why we have Easter eggs. The Pixies have made bunny bunting, Easter chick art, designed their own Easter eggs. Year 1s have looked at the symbols of Easter, hot cross buns, lambs and eggs and Year 2s have looked at Easter traditions from around the world.
Wizards class
And another term comes to an end...
In Wizards this week, hot cross buns were created in the kitchen by some of the year 5s in preparation for Good Friday: the children enjoyed the process of proving the dough and watching it grow, as well as adding the crosses on the top before cooking. A great term of cooking and another tasty treat created.
As part of our work on world faiths, the children have been finding out about the Passover Festival, which is celebrated by Jewish people in Spring. They enjoyed listening to the story of the first Passover when Moses led the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt after God sent the 10 plagues. In Art, they used different media, including watercolours, felt pens and collaging to create images of the plagues and a scene from the story: Benny chose the parting of the Red Sea for his central picture. The children also completed their stained-glass window Easter cards.
The Wizards are looking forward to their trip to Bristol at the start of next term where they will be finding out more about the slave trade in Bristol as well as comparing Bristol to Chadlington. Our documentary for the end-of-year film festival will be based on our trip too.
Happy Easter!
Year 2/3 Multi-skills Festival at CNS
'On Wednesday, the Year 2s and 3s went to the Multi-skills festival at Chipping Norton School. There were other schools taking part as well, and we were split into teams: Denmark, Germany and Spain.
We started doing warm-ups before the festival started. Then the fun began! We did ball skills: catching, rolling to a target and even rolling a ball around our bodies, which was challenging. We practised balancing - on a hard surface and on a squishy surface. In the sports hall, we threw a foam rocket (a bit like a javelin or spear) as far as possible, and we raced over an obstacle course as fast as we could.
When the festival ended, we were given a gold wristband and a certificate. It was great fun!'
Reported by Y2: Ada, Allegra, Emily, Lola, Merry, Niamh and Tia.
STEM focus
What’s STEM? Well, it’s ‘Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths’ and it’s an area in which the children at Chadlington excel!
Once a project is identified, the children (from Reception to Y4) work collaboratively to design, make and solve problems as they inevitably occur.
An element of competition is always present: who can make the tallest tower, the strongest house, the most buoyant and strong foil boat, and design a ramp for stunt cars to make a leap of faith? Children discover how shapes, gravity and materials can affect the desired outcome through either trial and error or skilful calculation.
The best thing from our perspective is not just to hear how well the children communicate and share their ideas, but to witness the extent to which they are happily engaged in participating in a shared vision and how much fun they’ve had in terms of creative problem-solving!
We’re looking forward to next term’s projects … they will be FUN!
