Engineers and Earth Day

This term in school 'We are Engineers'. Pupils in the Shire have investigated a flight timeline. The Dragons have been exploring sinking ships and the Wizards navigated Bristol.
The Shire
Pupils in the Shire are looking at flight as part of their 'Engineers' topic. The Pixies are discovering mini beasts and the Elves and Griffins are planning to make models for the timeline of kites, balloons, airships, planes and perhaps a rocket! The role play area has been transformed into a garden complete with greenhouse tent.
On Tuesday the children celebrated Earth Day. They looked at ways to care for the Earth and how the smallest things can help our planet. The year twos read a prayer for Earth day and the Pixies made hand print paintings holding the earth, to symbolise our power and our planet.
For the end of year film, the children have been busy copying illustration styles for the backdrop to the animation part of the film.
For the live action part, they have been costume designing little explorer t-shirts and caps.
This week, the children enjoyed the rainbow toast that they made using food colouring and milk.
Dragons
To start the term, the children have been learning about famous engineers, for example, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, as well as finding out about the times they lived in. They have been thinking about the different skills that you need to be an engineer and the different types of engineers. The Dragons discussed the skills needed to be an engineer and decided that they needed maths, problem-solving, and to have good creative ideas. They also talked about failure and how the engineers failed many times but got up and tried again. This led to the children thinking about the things they might need to improve upon in order to become an engineer.
Parents, please encourage your children to practice their times tables! In maths, we are focusing on getting faster at learning them. TT Rockstars is one way to encourage this.
We have made paper boats and read about the sinking of the Titanic. Pupils explored forces that cause floating and sinking. They investigated the weight the boats could take before they sank.
Year 3 pupils made pesto pasta with fresh ingredients. They tried tasting olive oil, learning about the journey of food, for example, where pine nuts come from.
Wizards
In Wizards, the term began with our trip to Bristol. The children used 'What3Words' to navigate their way along the route to find out how Bristol has changed over time. In the Georgian House Museum, the Wizards saw what life would have been like for both the gentry and their servants in the home of John Pinney, who owned a sugar plantation in Nevis in the Caribbean. They all liked the ice bath which he used every day!
In the M Shed Museum, the children saw the statue of Edward Colston (a slave trader), which was famously pushed into the river by protestors. They are now working collaboratively to produce a display about our trip by drawing pictures and researching and writing about different elements of the city of Bristol, including the River Avon.
